Virginia Youth Soccer Association Board President Retires After 21 Years of Service

Fredericksburg, VA (February 4, 2022) At a special Board of Directors meeting, the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) board voted to accept the resignation of Board President Denise Edwards. As provided in the VYSA Bylaws, Vice President Bob Maynes assumed the role of acting President. Again as provided in the Bylaws, Bob appointed Bill Phillips as President pending a vote of the VYSA Board of Directors. After a unanimous vote, Bill Phillips has assumed the role as President.

Denise Edwards devoted more than twenty years to serving the soccer community at the local, state, regional, and national levels.  She coached and has served as SEVYSA Administrator; area commissioner, parliamentarian, and president of Norfolk Youth Soccer League; Executive Director of Virginia Rush (formerly Virginia Beach Soccer Club); administrator of the Virginia Soccer League, Inc., and VYSA Vice President and later VYSA President.  On the regional and national levels, Denise has been a respected and often sought-out state president.  She was instrumental in the building of the  VYSA Publix Training Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Denise's skills in organization, financial management, and leadership have been invaluable to youth soccer in Virginia and the District of Columbia.

"The fact that VYSA is one of the top performing state associations in US Youth Soccer is due in no small part to the leadership of Denise Edwards over the last 21 years. She will be greatly missed at both the state and national levels where her opinions were sought after and respected.” said Bob Maynes, VYSA Vice President.

Denise will serve on the board as the immediate Past President.

Incoming President William “Bill” Phillips has been involved in youth soccer in Virginia for the past two decades. Bill has served on the VYSA Board of Directors and been its Treasurer since 2016. As a professional tournament director, Bill traveled extensively to other regions and has developed a unique understanding of the culture of youth soccer across the country. He also led the process that resulted in the hiring of Don Rawson as the new Executive Director for VYSA.

Board of Directors member Richard Smith acknowledged that “Bill was a unanimous choice of the Board to replace Denise Edwards. Bill understands the game is evolving and will provide the necessary board leadership to ensure VYSA supports member leagues and clubs.”
