Referee Lecture: Officiating the Women’s Game - Sandra Serafini

Sandra Serafini will explore the similarities and differences in officiating the men’s and women’s games, including foul selection, tactical tendencies, and player management techniques.

TOPSoccer Course - Auke Wiersma
8:30 am - 9:30 am Room 23 B
     The TOPSoccer course gives the candidates the opportunity to learn about some of the characteristics of the four major disabilities we see in TOPSoccer: Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum, ADHD and CP. The candidates will discuss the ways of coaching players with special needs, how to communicate with the players and what to do in case of an injury situation. The course will end with a field session in which several coaching methods are demonstrated. The candidates will act as TOPSoccer buddies.

Coaching Lecture: A Parent’s Role in Player Development - Carl Gray

Every parent wants their child to be successful.  What is the truth behind player development and how much a parent can guide their son/daughter?  Coach Gray will provide all with 7 action tips for parents.

It’s Not the Same Old State Cup - Anne Thompson and the State Cup Committee

     The National Championship Series is evolving with the game.  A discussion of the here and now and the future vision for the National Championship Series.     

Soccer Across America

     The Soccer Across America program presentation will discuss opportunities and methods for clubs to increase membership by reaching out to those groups within your community that might not otherwise participate in VYSA and to encourage greater participation in soccer opportunities at the local level. Steve Bender and Marcelo Gangotena will explain the steps thay have used successfully to put on soccer events that have indentified new players for local clubs.

      Keeping your soccer club up to date isn’t always easy. Today’s clubs offer soccer programs from tots to adults and everything in between. In addition to the traditional fall and spring seasons, clubs offer winter leagues, summer leagues, camps, clinics, academies, after-school soccer and all manner of other activities running throughout the entire year. Clubs are professionalizing their management and finances, getting into field development, looking at risk management, improving communications and generally adopting modern management tools. Hear the latest in how to keep up from a panel of leaders from four of Virginia’s rapidly growing clubs: Ken Bass, President, Arlington Soccer Association; Tom Thomas, President, Loudoun Soccer Association; Mike Yeatts, Executive Director, Prince William Soccer Inc.; and Tommy Park, Executive Director, Alexandria Soccer Association.

Coaching Lecture: Building a Stronger Athlete - Dr. Dan Freigang

On-field training is only the tip of the iceburg.  Dr. Freigang will take us through the modern training methods necessary to become a stronger athlete.  He will also deal with the strategies related to maximizing recovery, sleep habits and nutrition.

    Debi Honaker, VYSA Secretary, and Lisa Wilson, VYSA Registration Administrator, will talk with registrars about common errors in registration, changes in the online system, and current registration policies.  

Concussions: Kids Play - What Parents Should Know - Rick Tompkins

Rick Tompkins, Region I Risk Management Chair, will share what has been learned about concussions and their effects on our players. He will share information on new protocol in dealing with concussions and warning signs and ways to detect the effects of concussions.

Risk Management: What Background Checks Tell Us Rick Tompkins and Lisa Wilson                                                                             11:45 am - 12:45 am Room 25 A
     Lisa Wilson will discuss exactly what is "checked" during the background checks run by VYSA, along with the procedures involved with the checks.  Rick Tompkins will describe how these background checks are a small part of Risk Management, which is concerned with providing both a safe environment for every player and also protection for coaches, clubs, and players.

 Providing Technical Direction for a Recreational Program - Kate Samsot, Bob Bigney, Brian Hinkey

    If you want to improve the level of the players on the US National Team - improve the level of play for the average player in the US.” The average player in the US is a recreational player coached by a volunteer. Recreational soccer programs form the foundation of soccer on top of which everything else is built. Technical Directors Bob Bigney of Arlington Soccer, Brian Hinkey of Beach FC, and Kate Samsot of DC Stoddert will talk about the role of a technical director in a recreational soccer program.

Learn the critical importance of team work to referees, including tools and techniques for excellence.

Care and Prevention of Injuries - Amy Labadie

         This session will educate and inform coaches, parents and players of causes and management of common soccer injuries such as strains and sprains to the lower extremities (ACL tear, groin pull, quad/hamstring or calf strain), and common overuse injuries such as shin splints, patellar tendonitis, achilles tendonitis, and stress fractures.
Coaching Lecture: Where Does Self Confidence Come From? - Dr. Dan Freigang

How do coaches build self-confidence in their players and themselves?  Dr. Freigang will help coaches to recognize the timing on when to implement successful strategies.  He will show how to build self-confidence with a clear plan, how to nurture it, and how to sustain it through good and bad times.

    Norfolk Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Linda Bryant will share her experiences regarding social technology, the law, and children.  Booklets on Virginia laws as they apply to teenagers will be available to attendees.
