A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or
for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.

In keeping with these recommendations, VYSA recommends that all member clubs and leagues remind their members of these precautions.

Other precautions to consider:

If your son or daughter has a cough, cold or flu, keep them safe at home.

Replace the post game hand shake with a post game cheer or round of applause for the opposition.

Have players wash their hands before eating anything at the field - hand sanitizers should be part of the game day kit

Make sure players are not sharing drinking bottles or cups

If you have further questions or concerns regarding the H1N1 swine flu, VYSA strongly recommends contacting a physician.

US Soccer Federation Foundation Requests Support of the "Play On" Program

Dear Friends,

At the U.S. Soccer Foundation we believe that, if given a chance, children in vulnerable communities can overcome life’s many challenges — the numbing statistics on crime, educational performance and obesity that say the odds of a healthy, happy and productive life are stacked against them. Through efforts like our Soccer for Success program, we provide these children with opportunities to move forward and achieve their goals.

We give children the game of soccer. Soccer gives them the motivation to finish a homework assignment or study for a test. Soccer gives them the physical activity they need to stay healthy and fit. And soccer gives them trained and caring coaches who are committed to helping them develop both soccer skills and life skills they will need to secure a better future.

Soccer for Success provides free after-school soccer programming to thousands of children in grades K-8, offering them a safe environment to exercise daily, work with mentors and develop important life skills. Meet some of the children in the soccer for success program (Video)!

Help us expand the Soccer for Success program to cities across the United States.
