Fitness with the Ball: Paul Shaw, VYSA Coaching Education Director
Whenever possible, incorporate a ball with your demands. There are a ton of soccer related activities that will reflect the game and serve those fitness needs. For example: Looking to do intervals to boost that older player’s aerobic base. Play 1 v. 1 for 1 minute in a 10 x 20 grid, players score by dribbling over the end line. After they score, they attack the other line. Follow up with active rest for 90 seconds. Do 3-5 sets and increase intensity by rewarding wins.

As many of us know getting a young athlete to eat what will fuel the body best is not always easy! The main ingredient for muscle energy is carbohydrates (CHO). During times of increased tournaments and play it is best to increase CHO consumption 3-4 days prior to the event.

by Celia Mosier, VYSA ODP Girls Goalkeeping Coach
Although we all love to make a great diving save, it is important to remember that positioning and good footwork (shuffling, drop step, crossover step, etc.) will put you in position to make most saves without having to dive. Work on your keepers’ footwork and positioning each time you train and they’ll be one of those keepers who seems to always be in the right place at the right time.
